Mary Bell Crime Files. Mary Bell. Police interviewed local children, hoping someone had seen something that would lead to a suspect. Mary and Norma did a poor job of disguising their interest in the investigation in their interviews with police.
Both acted strangely. Norma was excited and Mary evasive, especially when police pointed out that she had been seen with Brian Howe on the day of his death.
They called her back for a second interview, and Mary, perhaps sensing investigators were closing in, made up a story about having seen an eight-year-old boy hit Brian on the day he died.
The boy, she said, had been carrying a pair of broken scissors. Both Norma and Mary broke down under further questioning. She was given sweets and chips and felt loved by her mother.
Ms Sereny, whose book is titled 'Cries Unheard', tells The Times thart she was so sceptical about the details of Bell's claims that she asked for them to be repeated three times.
Ms Sereny also says that it was Betty Bell's death three years ago that unlocked Mary Bell's silence. For most of her life she believed it to be Billy Bell, a habitual criminal who was later arrested for armed robbery, but she was already a baby when Bill married her mother.
Independent accounts from family members strongly suggest that Betty had more than once attempted to kill Mary and make her death look accidental during her first few years of life.
Her family was suspicious when Mary "fell" from a window, and when she "accidentally" consumed sleeping pills. On one such occasion, an independent witness saw Betty giving the pills to her daughter as sweets.
After the "fall" Mary experienced, it was reported that she had suffered brain damage as a result, but now this damage is attributed to childhood abuse from her own mother.
Mary had damage to her prefrontal cortex , an area associated with voluntary movements and decision-making. On 25 May , the day before her 11th birthday, Mary Bell strangled 4-year-old Martin Brown in a derelict house.
Between then and a second killing, she and a friend, Norma Joyce Bell —; no relation , aged 13, broke into and vandalised a nursery in Scotswood, leaving notes that claimed responsibility for the killing.
The family lived on one of the roughest roads — Whitehouse Road — in Scotswood, which was referred to as an area of extreme deprivation that housed a larger than average amount of criminality.

Family members have suggested that Betty attempted to kill Mary on more than one occasion and make it look accidental when Betty was just a small child.
The first was when Mary apparently fell from a window, and the second was when Mary accidentally took some sleeping pills.
On one occasion someone claimed to have witnessed Betty feeding Mary pills like they were sweets. One small girl complained to a teacher about how Mary had stubbed a cigarette out on her cheek.
Despite knowing about her violence, the school failed to address the issue. Mary was conditioned by her dysfunctional surroundings from an early age.
Her mother would allow men to abuse Mary from the age of just four , and due to the lack of space at home, Mary was exposed to what went on between Betty and her clients which, it was claimed, also involved sadomasochism.
All that alongside the sexual violence she witnessed between others became the norm in her young mind. Norma Joyce Bell no relation to Mary lived next door.
She was two years older but less intelligent. Norma followed Mary and was easily led by her, and together they became a pair that other children would avoid through fear.
The slums of Scotswood were gradually being demolished in an attempt to regenerate the area. On Saturday 11th May , Mary and Norma took a three year old boy to buy some sweets.
The pathologist concluded that it was a child that had murdered Brian. The reasoning being is the lack of force used to strangle Brian. With the death of another small boy, the police decided to reopen the case of Martin — believing they had been killed by the same individual.
The police then announced that they were looking for a child killer in the area of Scotswood. Even though there was hundreds of children in the area, Mary wanted to draw the attention to herself.
Mary would appear at all the conferences and soon police began to focus their attention on her. With her violent behaviour towards many of the children, police soon realised that Mary could potentially be their criminal.
However, a nine-year-old boy had been at the wasteland on the day that Brian was murdered and came forward to the police. The young boy, believed to have a mental age of four, was at first not believed by many in the area.
However, he insisted to the police that he had seen exactly what had happened and labelled Mary and Norma as the murderers. With a new witness, Mary and Norma were called in for questioning by the police.
A child psychologist was called to assist on the interviews. Mary denied ever being involved in the murders of the children and instead talked about when her mother would come to see her, if her dog was okay and what her mother was doing.
Mary then spoke openly about her friendship with Norma and how happy the two had been that day. That evening, Mary and Norma were taken into care.
Many took pity on Mary and Norma and believed that the two never really knew what they had done and the seriousness of it. At the police station, in the following days, Mary was continuously questioned.
